Building, Schools, Hospitals and Homes ...
How have you helped?

Through participation in the COINS 3 Peaks Challenge the Construction and Service Industry has raised £1.8m.  Since 2008, through your support the COINS Foundation has started building the infrastructure for successful communities, the primary aims of the Foundation is to build schools, hospitals and homes, the basic building blocks of communities.

The main programmes are in sub-Saharan Africa;  Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.  Most recently a programme has been initiated in Haiti.  There is also some support of projects at ‘home’ in the geographies where the funds are raised, the UK and the US.

Since 2008, more than £288,000 of the funds the industry has raised has been spent or been committed to building homes and more than £270,000 on schools.

School Projects

Kiira View School serves the community of Butagaya overlooking the River Nile, near its source Lake Victoria.   Kiira View Secondary School opened in February 2009.  Monies you have raised funded, a block of 4 classrooms, a library and laboratory, an administration block and one dormitory and quality sanitary facilities. More than 400 students are now receiving an education thanks to your help.

Onwards & Upwards Secondary School opened on 6th February, 2008.  The school is situated to the west of the Ugandan capital, Kampala.  By the end of the first term, over 200 students had enrolled at the school and demand for places was such that extra classrooms had to be built.  The school will grow to support a student population of over 1000. The school also employs 20 local people as teachers or support staff.

Kawama Widows and Orphans School was established as a community school for children who could not afford to attend the government school, and have lost their parent(s) to HIV/AIDS.  We have supported the programme by building two new class rooms and a library.  We have also provided fresh, clean water to a new modern sanitation block. The additinal classrooms will allow nearly two hundred children to access full-time education.

Hotcourses Primary School is based in Nyumbani Village, in Kitui Province, eastern Kenya.  Most of the children are orphans and all of them are from AIDS-affected families.  Your money has helped support the 225 children that are enrolled at the Hotcourses Primary School.  The School is supported by our Patron Jeremy Hunt M.P.

St Agnes School is a rural school in the Mkushi District of Central Province, Zambia.  Originally it catered for 250+ children in 3 woefully small inadequate classrooms. In 2009 your funds help to complete a new 2-classroom blocks for the school as well as a teachers house. Work was completed in December 2009.

Mikumbila School is in the Mkushi province of Northern Zambia. With just one 2-classroom block for the 200+ children who attend many classes are conducted outside in temporary structures. With your funds we have been able to help build 2-classroom blocks and latrines and 10 members of the local community are receiving training in building skills. Work began in July 2009 and is scheduled to be completed by Feb 2010.

Home Projects

We have primarily been working with our partner Habitat for Humanity to build homes in sub Saharan Africa.  The Construction and Service Industry have now built more than 200 houses providing homes for more than 1000 people across Mozambique, Zambia and Uganda.

Most recently we have pledged to build with your funds another 50 homes in Haiti, in the 2nd phase of reconstruction.  Working closely with Habitat for Humanity, the COINS Foundation will be looking beyond the relief effort of the next few months and be seeking to help with the long-term construction of decent permanent housing and other community facilities which will be so desperately required long after the attention of the world’s media has moved on.

All the running costs of the COINS Foundation and the cost associated with the COINS 3 Peaks CHallenge are sponsored by COINS business,  This means that every single penny raised goes directly to the people who need it most.
