In 1976 Habitat for Humanity was founded with the sole aim of tackling poverty housing on a global scale. Thirty years later they are working in 100 countries around the world and have built 230,000 homes in partnership with over 1 million people in need of simple, decent housing. The families who live in the homes (Homepartners) must invest up to 500 hours of their own labour (sweat equity) into building their house and the homes of their neighbours. As homes are built, so is the community. Homepartners pay back the cost of their homes over time at a rate they can afford through a low cost, non-profit mortgage. All repayments go into a revolving fund to pay for more homes to be built. A Habitat for Humanity home is a hand up – not a hand out. Habitat for Humanity is now building at such a rate that every 21 minutes, another family moves into a simple, decent home and begins a new life of hope, dignity and opportunity.
