'Photographs courtesy of Habitat for Humanity' Construction Industry Funds the Rebuild of Homes in Haiti
The COINS Foundation has committed to build 50 homes with monies raised by the Construction Industry primarily through the COINS 3 Peaks Challenge.
As we all know a massive earthquake registering magnitude 7.0 wreaked havoc throughout the Caribbean nation of Haiti, damaging countless homes. An estimated 3 million people are dead, injured or made homeless in the chaos of the capital Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas. This was the worst quake for two centuries striking one of the world's poorest nations.
In parallel to the emergency relief response COINS Foundation in partnership with Habitat for Humanity will support the longer-term, marathon reconstruction effort that will be required to rebuild and transform Haiti, the sustainable development required when world's attention is no longer focused on Haiti.
Habitat for Humanity is a shelter, housing and construction specialist who focuses on the essential reconstruction which immediately follows the emergency aid, which is currently flooding in. Habitat for Humanity has operated in Haiti for 26 years and has a significant infrastructure and expertise in country to respond and assist with the recovery and reconstruction process.
We think the cost of the typical rebuild of a single home in Haiti will be £1,700 but hard to say precisely right now.
Professor Paul Collier, patron of the COINS Foundation is fully endorsing this approach, “Haiti needs transformation rather than reconstruction.” He said, “We aren’t putting Haiti back on its feet – sadly, Haiti was never on its feet. The Haitian government recently produced a long term development plan and it is now vital that the International Community use the energy of the moment to pick up on this plan to do longer-term transformation. If we don’t do this we will be back in the cycle of catastrophe.” Professor Collier warned, “This earthquake is the 5th catastrophe Haiti has had in the last 15yrs.”Radio4Interview If you would like to follow this lead and help transform Haiti you can do so at:
